Small Business Know-How – Saving Money on Security

Rows of secure file folders

Your small business keeps personal, confidential information about employees, customers, and contractors. Save yourself time, energy, money, and grief by preventing the release of this information after its use has ended, by destroying it no matter how that information is stored. With a reduced risk of disclosure, you’re also decreasing the chances of dealing with the harsh consequences of unintentional data leaks.

TITAN Mobile Shredding has provided small businesses with information security and compliance since 2005. Our customers are across Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. They trust us with confidential records destruction and you can too. Call us at (866) 848-2699 today so we can discuss your needs and how we can help.

Why Should My Small Business Be Concerned About Information Security?

Your small business may need to comply with any state and federal laws requiring you to secure a wide range of information. Safeguarding your clients’ and employees’ confidential information is also the right thing to do. That information was given to you in good faith on the assumption you would protect it. How would a security breach costing your employees and customers financial losses impact your relationships with them?

Your business probably has sensitive personal information in its files. This includes names, Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, and bank account information. You also might have also stored important confidential information about your business, including marketing plans, customer lists, and product designs.

In the wrong hands, this information can result in fraud and identity theft, which will put your company in a terrible light. This could result in less revenue because your customers lost trust in you and those harmed could sue you.

What Should We Do to Protect Confidential Information?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) states a good security plan is based on five key principles:

  1. Take stock: Find out what personal and confidential information is in your files and computers
  2. Scale down: Keep only what you need. The less you have, the less there is to lose
  3. Lock it: Protect the information you keep
  4. Pitch it: Properly dispose of information that you no longer need
  5. Plan ahead: Create a plan in case of a security breach

What you think is trash to be tossed into a dumpster can be spun into gold by an identity thief. Credit card receipts, papers, or CDs with personally-identifying information are literally outside your business for the taking. If you’re disposing of computers, without destroying hard drives and other memory devices you could literally be giving away information that could harm clients and employees.

The FTC has these suggestions for safe disposal of confidential information:

  • Put into action reasonable information disposal practices that prevent unauthorized access to or use of personally-identifying information. They should be based on the sensitivity of the information and the costs and benefits of disposal methods
  • Shred, burn, or pulverize paper records before discarding them
  • Employees must follow your procedures, whether they’re working from home or in your office
How Can We Save Money on Document Shredding?

Every customer is unique, and we put together the right program based on their needs and budget. Regular shredding at your business may be the best option, or we can come to your location for an annual or bi-annual document purge. You could also bring your documents to our Doylestown location where they can be shredded.

We already have customers in your area, whether that’s Philadelphia, Doylestown, or Trenton. You probably belong to business networking groups, industry associations, or a chamber of commerce. Your fellow members face the same information security issues you do. If you and other local businesses work with us, we may be able to lower the cost. We’ll also be happy to give a presentation at meetings to explain how our process works and the benefits our customers receive.
